A staff research engineer position is available in the Bioenergy Sciences and Technology Directorate to support work on the advancement of thermochemical and catalytic processes to produce low carbon products, including sustainable aviation fuels, from the conversion of biomass and waste carbon feedstocks. Candidates who are interested in launching independent careers with the desire to build programs in these areas as a principal investigator should apply.
The engineer will lead laboratory-scale reactor operations and grow the center’s capabilities in producing manufactured, technical catalysts for demonstration and bench-scale reactors. The engineer will serve as a technical lead of lab-scale catalytic reactors and will work with project leads, technicians, and researchers to design and execute experiments. The engineer will be responsible for ensuring safe operation of experiments, maintaining quality control of experimental results, and providing comprehensive analysis of results to support a variety of projects. As the technical leader for bench-scale operations, the engineer must gain an in-depth understanding of the reactor systems and proactively lead changes to be responsive for current and future R&D needs.
In addition to serving as the technical leader for laboratory-scale reactor capabilities, the engineer will be expected to be involved in business development in the form of leading proposal writing for funding agencies and engaging with industry to enable technology development.
A continued emphasis on publications, presentations, and IP generation (e.g., records of invention, patents) is expected.
