Our Trainee Engineer programme lasts for three years and combines academic study with work based experience.
Working within our Transmission business, you’ll have the opportunity to study towards a HNC and Diploma in Higher Education in Energy Engineering.
When not studying, you will balance your time on placements which may include working in the field in Transmission, the Control Rooms or working alongside experienced SSE crafts people and engineers. You will have opportunities to work towards becoming a Low Voltage Switcher and then work towards High Voltage Switching (which makes the Network safe to work on, maintains Network integrity and resilience whilst ensuring safe and reliable supply of electricity), and become more involved in the daily operation, repair and design of the future Network whilst supporting the drive towards a Transmission NetZero.
By the time you reach the third year of the programme you’ll be given increased responsibility in managing jobs, including all technical aspects, safety management and the supervision of crafts people or contractors.
On completion of your programme, you will be qualified to work as one of the following disciplines Maintenance, Engineering Project Manager, Project Design, Systems Planner, or an Operational Control Engineer.
The Transmission Trainee Engineer programme is designed to build the foundation blocks of your career within the Transmission business, providing you with great opportunities to be exposed to engineering excellence across our business – whilst developing your academic, theoretical and practical skills. This will provide you with an excellent opportunity to become the Power Engineer of the future.

Flexible in your approach to work to maximise your chances of success, and you should be happy working alone or as part of a team.
Comfortable to spend some time living away from home whilst attending college or on placements across SSE.
For entrance onto the educational aspect of our programme it’s important that you have, or expect to achieve the below qualifications prior to starting the programme in August 2024:
1 Scottish Higher at grade C or above in Maths or Physics OR
1 A level at grade D or above in Maths or Physics OR
Alternatively, NC/NQ Engineering at SCQF level 6 or equivalent OR the completion of a Foundation Apprenticeship Engineering
Prospective students without the standard entry requirements as listed above are encouraged to apply, appropriate industry related experience will be taken into consideration.
We will not be able to accept your application if you have a HNC, HND or DipHE in Energy Engineering or an engineering related degree.
