In the next three years the consortium intends to pave the way for large scale offshore wind roll-out with emphasis on a first operational hub-and-spoke project in the early 2030s. To materialise this ambition the NSWPH programme is organised into three main tracks: Project Scoping (towards a first project), Energy System (understanding the transition towards the future energy system) and Market and Regulation (developing the framework that supports the transition). We aim to define the location, technical functionalities and (inter)connections for a first hub-and-spoke, which fits in a longer-term outlook and an appropriate scheme of market rules. When successful this will evolve towards a project realisation phase of a first project while at the same time the NSWPH programme will continue to pave the way for the next hub-and-spoke project(s).
The track Energy Systems should lower risks for the realisation of a first project by providing a longer-term outlook. This longer-term outlook should:
One important focus of the upcoming studies will be on the development of the first 12-16 GW Hub-and-Spoke project in the early 2030s. An additional focus is the long term energy system perspective highlighting the need and urgency to change our ways of development at the example of the first hub.
As Advisor, you will be part of the Gasunie NSWPH team and carry content expert responsibility for further developing and improving the NSWPH scenario framework as part of the overall consortium’s activity agenda (2019-2023). The NSWPH scenario framework will be a starting point for in- and external studies. These studies will largely fall within the work stream ‘Energy System’. This work stream further develops the energy system vision for NSWPH programme. The work addresses the fundamental challenges of the energy transition, the role of large scale offshore wind within this transition and develops the solution pathways for cost-efficient and timely realisation of the integrated energy infrastructure. All activities are focused on building an acknowledged and broadly supported integral energy system vision for large scale offshore wind roll-out and grid integration, from where we are today to “completion” in 2050. This work provides the basis and evidence that the proposed implementation route yields maximum, long term, benefits to society.
As content expert you will further develop the NSWPH scenario framework. This framework includes integrated energy system scenario datasets, collected and derived from recent scenario studies. This includes both scenarios for 2050 and scenario pathways up to 2050 with a five-year time interval (2030, 2035, 2040, 2045) and consistent with the 2050 integrated energy system scenarios. The NSWPH integrated energy system covers North West Europe. The geographic granularity (or regionalisation) in general matches with the (sub)regions as given by the ENTSO-E e-Highway2050 study. For Denmark, Germany and The Netherlands higher granularity is included to be able to perform more detailed national grid modelling to identify intra nodal infrastructure constraints. The shell of European countries adjacent to North West Europe interact with the North West European energy system. These are included in sufficient detail to be able to properly account for them. Especially for Germany and cross-border transmission of energy. The modelling tool applied (Python script) ensures an overall consistent dataset of supply and demand – for all energy carriers – on an annual and hourly basis and covers the integrated energy system and interaction between energy carriers.
