Commissioning Engineer, Energy Storage

Borrego Solar is seeking a Commissioning Engineer, Energy Storage to join our growing team! As projects kick off into the design phase, your role will be to partner with Borrego’s internal project engineering team and professional electrical engineers, to design the controls system architecture for storage and solar-plus-storage projects. Critically, you will bring experience in network architecture and controls system design and commissioning, to build Borrego’s knowledge base in these areas and allow more informed and productive collaboration with our OEMs and DAS/SCADA partners. You will be responsible for defining the controls narratives and commissioning plans that we establish with our partners, to ensure the quality implementation of our solutions for each customer market application, and for leading the successful commissioning of each project upon completion of construction.

The Commissioning Engineer will report to the Director of Energy Storage Engineering.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE, BUT WILL NOT BE LIMITED TO:

• Investigate controls requirements for market applications, including regulations and utility/ISO compliance requirements for telemetry and controls hardware and software, to support Borrego’s business development in new markets
• Collaborate with our project and business developers, bringing a technical feasibility perspective to questions of what we propose to customers and what market opportunities we pursue
• Contribute in Borrego’s evaluation and selection of automation hardware and software necessary to meet current and future applications for energy storage systems
• Support technical elements of RFIs/RFPs in collaboration with Borrego’s project developers and Applications Engineers
• Define controls requirements on a project basis and evaluate proposals for controls system solutions from hardware and software vendor partners
• Define project commissioning requirements and support the development and execution of commissioning plans to ensure project controls solutions satisfy the required applications
• Establish controls specifications for Borrego’s standard integrated energy storage products
• Maintain a detailed understanding of Borrego Solar’s design and operational standards and approved products

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Possess a bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or controls engineering; Professional Engineering licensure is a plus
• Have 3-5 years’ experience in SCADA, building automation, or controls system design
• Have strong familiarity with technical communications protocols (Modbus/TCP, DNP3.0, BACnet, etc.), commonly used controls software/hardware platforms, and communication standards (MESA, Sunspec, etc.)
• Have strong understanding of IT networking and security principles and network architecture design
• Have strong knowledge of electrical standards (UL/IEEE) and National Electrical Code and U.S. utility interconnection standards
• Have superior written and oral communications skills and have demonstrated the ability to communicate technical matters to non-technical audiences
• Have familiarity in developing or commissioning PID control loops
• Have familiarity or experience with energy market applications and telemetry requirements
• Have demonstrated the ability to inspire confidence in customers in controls engineering capacity
• Have demonstrated the ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Be comfortable working on a small team in a fast-paced environment
