POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering and Operations, the Maintenance & Reliability Engineer will provide technical expertise to monitor, analyze, manage and maintain the distribution system and identify, design and implement reliability improvements. Safety and reliability will be assured by taking professional accountability for the development, review and approval of designs, drawings, plans, standards, specifications, equipment and installations.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

General

• Provide technical oversight of distribution system maintenance and reliability
• Prepare and signoff on engineering assessments, reports, studies, plans, specifications, designs, drawings, maps, calculations, policies, procedures and work instructions
• Develop project plans, justifications, cost-benefit analyses and estimates
• Act as a project manager for assigned projects and initiatives; define scopes of work, track budgets, manage timelines, change orders, work quality and deliverables; keep detailed project records
• Review and approve designs; enforce code, regulatory and contract compliance
• Obtain various permits, approvals and registrations
• Establish, evaluate or manage vendor relationships, service contracts and warranties
• Represent the organization as an engineering subject matter expert and technical authority

Maintenance

• Lead the development of comprehensive maintenance plans; prepare detailed work packages and necessary technical documents for field execution
• Define and align maintenance plans within broader asset management programs
• Monitor, track and analyze asset performance and maintenance history
• Conduct asset condition assessments; identify and prioritize required work
• Maintain up-to-date engineering drawings and asset records
• Research, specify and approve equipment replacements, retrofits and upgrades; ensure required functionality, system integration, interoperability and standards compliance; determine, configure and program equipment settings
• Provide technical field support; troubleshoot system problems; determine, propose and implement solutions

Reliability

• Lead the development of reliability improvement plans and initiatives; champion contingency planning
• Benchmark, monitor and trend reliability at system, equipment and component levels; identify and assess vulnerabilities
• Assess design problems, equipment failures, asset obsolescence, and adherence to changing regulatory requirements
• Conduct root cause analysis
• Research, develop and implement reliability design improvements; work to enhance safety, maintainability and operational efficiency
• Optimize system performance
• Support construction activities; oversee quality control & assurance; inspect and approve constructed plant

Project Development & Detailed Engineering

• Prepare conceptual designs, feasibility assessments and project proposals; conduct site visits, evaluate constructability and prepare project estimates
• Assess, quantify, develop, model and forecast economic evaluations, risk assessments, operational performance and system efficiencies
• Prepare detailed scopes of work and equipment specifications; strive to minimize project risks and likelihood of change orders
• Create, review and approve detailed engineering designs, plans and drawings to be issued for construction; oversee, direct, review and approve consultant engineering work; implement stage-gating design processes and controls
• Keep up-to-date engineering models of distributed energy assets; conduct engineering studies, calculations and assessments
• Manage utility connection processes
• Interface with customers, vendors, utilities and regulators; gather and provide technical information as required
• Develop and approve commissioning plans; assist, perform and witness testing

Safety & Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure adherence to OHSA, EUSA, UWPC, TSSA, OESC, OBC and Ontario Regulation 22/04
• Manage auditing, reporting and compliance with various regulatory agencies
• Implement appropriate engineering controls, rigor and due diligence in all work processes
• Report system deficiencies and safety concerns; assess, recommend, prioritize and implement corrective actions

• QUALIFICATIONS
• To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical or systems engineering OR a combination of education and experience deemed equivalent
• Minimum 5 years of progressive engineering experience is required maintaining and improving infrastructure, preferably in a heavy industrial or utility environment
• Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, or ability to obtain within 12 months
• PMP designation considered an asset
• Experience performing operational modeling and financial analysis strongly preferred
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Visio, AutoCAD, CMMS/work order systems and relevant engineering analysis software
• Knowledge of electrical distribution system and distributed energy systems design
• Demonstrated experience with the specification, installation and commissioning of major equipment
• Experience preparing specifications, design standards and engineering studies
• Competency in reviewing and approving electrical and mechanical engineering drawings
• Experience with building automation systems and industrial control systems
• Knowledge of OHSA and its regulations, industry safe work practices, TSSA requirements, the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, the Ontario Building Code and Ontario Regulation 22/04.
• Strong leadership aptitude; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to listen to and motivate others
• Self-starter; highly motivated and able to work independently; asks for help when required
• Ability to write clear and concise technical reports, deliver effective presentations, and answer questions with definitive professional authority
• Analytical with excellent reasoning & decision making skills; ability to conduct research to support decisions and recommendations
• Organizational savvy and political acuity; ability to recognize and deal with sensitive issues in a discreet and professional manner
• Valid Class G Driver’s License in good standing
