Postdoctoral Researcher – Power and Energy Systems Modeler
CO – Golden
Postdoc (Fixed Term)
Hours Per Week
Annual Salary Range: $66,700 – $110,100
Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the positions work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when in determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
The successful candidate will conduct research in the area of energy system design and planning, with a focus on implementing advanced models and algorithms that provide insights into market-based integration of electrolytic hydrogen production and renewable energy sources.
The successful candidate will be part of the Power Systems Design & Planning Group in the Power Systems Engineering Center (PSEC) at NREL. PSEC supports the science and technology goals of the U.S. Department of Energy and NREL toward a sustainable energy future. The center works with the electricity industry to optimize strategies for effectively interconnecting renewable resources and emerging energy efficiency technologies in the existing electric power system.
This position will emphasize the implementation of novel analysis methods to address the interface of a variety of topics including renewables integration, hydrogen technologies, electricity markets, and energy system design, in view of high and ultra-high carbon-free and renewable energy systems. It will involve the formulation, design, and implementation of novel techno-economic models, as well as conducting energy system analyses to assess the impacts of new technologies.
The ideal candidate will have a solid background in energy system modeling, optimization, and algorithms for energy system operations and planning. Fluency in GAMS/Python programming language is necessary. A solid understanding of optimization theory and energy system operations is essential.
