The Power System Engineering Center (PSEC) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is inviting applications for a senior research position to work on government and industry sponsored research in the area of power and energy systems. Specific expertise in dynamic and transient modeling, Power-Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL), Controller-Hardware-In-the-Loop (CHIL), steady state assessment, and real-time simulations is required. Multi-domain co-simulation expertise for power systems, electrified transportation, communications, hydropower, thermal systems, etc. is needed. The researcher should also have significant experience in the broad area of transient and dynamic modeling of power systems using real-time tools (RTDS, Opal RT, Typhoon HIL, etc.) and non-real-time tools (PSCAD, DigSilent, PSLF, etc.). The researcher should have substantial experience of real-time simulations, PHIL, and CHIL of novel technologies for grid integration with transmission, distribution, microgrids, etc. Experience in establishing a research facility/lab and managing early-career researchers to meet technical targets that solve relevant and cutting-edge challenges is a must.

Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 7 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 9 or more years of experience .

Applies extensive engineering technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource. Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Annual Salary Range: $88,800 – $159,700
Of fers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
