The Transmission Operations Engineer will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on the Transmission pipeline system at FortisBC. Reporting to the Chief Engineer – Pipelines, this unique position will involve working closely with Transmission Operations on a continous basis to provide engineering assistance and support for repair, rehabilitation and resiliency work on the existing pipeline system. This role requires an engineering skillset grounded in both the design and operations of natural gas pipeline systems with a demonstrated safety mentality in each. Travel between the FortisBC Regions (Coast, Vancouver Island, Interior) in order to support Transmission Operations will be a key part of this job. This position requires a motivated individual who thrives in a high paced and demanding environment both in the field and office. Responsibilities
Maintain alignment by working closely with the Transmission Operations team on a continuous basis to manage the lifecycle of FortisBC’s gas transmission pipelines;
Acts as the engineer of record (EOR) for Transmission Operations related activities such as emergency repairs, integrity digs, crossing upgrades, pipeline cutouts, etc. for different regions across BC (Coast, Vancouver Island and Interior);
Assist Transmission Operations with inline inspection and pipeline pigging activities;
Provide specification and requirements for hydro tests including witness/sign off on tests before pipelines are returned to service as the EOR (as required);
Validate documentation (e.g. MTR, records) on equipment (e.g. pipe, vales) as required for Transmission Operations either as EOR or when requested by another EOR;
Develop and review work procedures impacting Transmission Operations;
Work with and liaise with internal FortisBC stakeholders (e.g. System Planning, Gas Control) to ensure the system operating parameters can be maintained and/or managed during field activities;
Coordinate Transmission pipeline operational activities with planned outages and maintenance windows and represent the operational interests/requirements of Transmission within the Integrated Resource Plan;
Champion and develop an integrated resource plan for the FortisBC Transmission system;
Maintain and track calculations required for pipeline maintenance work- e.g. keep spreadsheet of results for removing natural gas from pipelines and filling natural gas into pipelines;
Assist Transmissions Operations in tracking GHG emissions from pipeline blowdowns;
Responsibility for compliance with regulations, codes, standards and guidelines as they apply to the design, environment, safety, regulatory, construction, and maintenance of FortisBC’s transmission system;
Work with the Transmission Pipeline team focused on Major Capital projects to provide an operational prospective for incorporation into pre-FEED, FEED, detailed engineering, IFC, and as-built stages for new pipelines and related infrastructure, and upgrades to existing pipelines systems. Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited post-secondary academic institution with a minimum of 4-7 years related experience.
Currently registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).
Experience working within a regulated utility working environment, preferably in the natural gas transmission and distribution utility systems, plus operational field experience would be considered asset.
Demonstrated ability to work in different environments on a daily basis (remote, field, office);
Demonstrated leadership skills – ability to provide clear focus and direction to meet objectives;
Ability to perform under pressure with a calm and efficient presence;
Ability to take initiative, analyze and solve problems with a positive attitude. This involves working proactively with little direction;
Exceptional communication skills;
Excellent technical skills demonstrated through relevant operational and/or field experience;
Ability to persist to ensure a task or job is completed despite competing priorities and timelines
Ability to think innovatively and creatively in time sensitive situations;
Developed interpersonal and collaborative skills – must be a team player able to interact harmoniously with a diverse internal and external group;
Demonstrated safety leadership – display safety orientated behavior and attitude on a daily basis.
